Purok VX60 product review

Finding a suitable adhesive for your application is never easy. You may have found out about Purok VX60 from your own research, or maybe it was a product suggested to you. Either way, you want to know all about Purok VX60.

Here at Forgeway, we manufacture and supply over 3000 tonnes of adhesive and sealant products every year. Purok VX60 is one of those products. We know everything there is to know about it.

We decided to write this article to give you an overview of everything you need to know about Purok VX60. We know you will think it’s going to be biased seeing as it is our product. We’ve done our best to be as subjective as possible.

We know that Purok VX60 is an excellent adhesive for certain applications. However, we also know that there are some situations where we would suggest an alternative adhesive product.

By the end of this article, you will know everything you need to know about Purok VX60.

What is Purok VX60

Purok VX60 is a two-component methyl methacrylate adhesive. It is typically used as a structural adhesive, but it has gap-filling capabilities too. The product itself would usually come in a 1:1 200ML or 400ML cartridge. However, you can also get larger quantities such as 18KG drums.

There are three different variations of Purok VX60; VX60-15, VX60-35, and VX60-75. The number after the name refers to the fixture time of that variation. For example, Purok VX60-15 would take 15 minutes to reach handling strength.

Why makes Purok VX60 a good product

It is very high strength

Purok VX60 can achieve strengths of up to 25Mpa. Obviously, this strength will vary depending on the substrate you are bonding. However, with some metals like aluminium to aluminium, you can achieve strengths of 25Mpa. To put that into context, it is strong enough to replace a weld.

Fast but adjustable cure time

As you will already know, you can get three different variations of Purok VX60. Nonetheless, all three variations will reach full cure within 24 hours. The speedy cure time is one of the main advantages of Purok VX60. It means you can get very high strengths in a very short space of time.

Requires minimal surface preparation

One of the main advantages of using methyl methacrylate adhesives is that they don’t need surface preparation. They have a unique ability to ‘cut through’ surface contamination. You will not need to extensively prepare the surface before bonding.

You do not need to prime or treat the surface to ensure a strong bond

Bonds dissimilar materials

When trying to achieve a strong joint, welding is one potential solution. However, the materials you are joining must be the same otherwise it won’t form a weld. With Purok VX60, you don’t need to worry about the materials being the same. You can bond metal to plastic or GRP to composite. You don’t have to worry about the materials being the same to achieve a strong bond.

Purok VX60 does have some drawbacks

Limited flexibility

The lack of flexibility makes it an ideal adhesive for some situations where you need a stiff bond with little movement. This lack of flexibility does also mean that it can’t cope with much movement. Particularly when bonding plastics, the stress is transferred to the substrate rather than absorbed by the adhesive.

Exothermic reaction

All methyl methacrylates have an exothermic reaction as they cure. Purok VX60 is no different. It can reach temperatures of 120℃ when curing. This can be a problem as the heat can damage the substrate’s aesthetic and cause ‘witnessing’.

Limited working time

When an adhesive has a short cure time, it also means the working time is short. This basically means you don’t have much time to put the substrates in place before it starts to cure.

Where to use Purok VX60 (with 3 examples)

When customers ask us “where can I use Purok VX60?” it is difficult to give a straight answer that isn’t vague. We could say “anywhere you need a strong, non-flexible bond with a fast cure time.” Maybe that answers the question. But in order to help you know whether it is right for your application, we will provide some examples.

Example 1: Bonding aluminium composite (ACM) panels to buildings

Purok VX60 is an ideal adhesive in this situation. It forms a very high strength bond and the application doesn’t require much flexibility. It is an ideal adhesive for bonding materials to buildings as the bond will be under static load and will not experience much movement.

Example 2: Bonding chairs and seats in vehicles

The safety of passengers is massively important to any vehicle manufacturer. When fixing seating down in vehicles, you need to ensure the bond is strong enough to hold in the event of a crash.

Example 3: Bonding metal fasteners to composite parts

Big head metal fasteners are a typical example of this application. Sometimes these metal fasteners are used for structural situations. When the bond is under static load, you won’t need much flexibility. Purok VX60 is perfect for this as it is strong but also won’t flex.

Next steps with Purok VX60

At this point, you will have learned all about Purok VX60. You now know what makes it a good product, as well as some of its drawbacks. The example situations should give you a good idea about whether it could be a good fit for your application.

Here at Forgeway, we are adhesive specialists. Purok VX60 is one of our most popular products. But we know that it may not always be a good fit for your application.

If you need a flexible adhesive, Purok VX60 is definitely not a good fit for you. The limited flexibility will not perform well in joints where there is going to be a lot of movement.

However, if you are bonding a joint that will not experience a lot of movement and needs a high-strength adhesive to cure quickly, Purok VX60 is likely a good fit for you.

If you have decided that Purok VX60 is a good fit for you, you can get in touch with one of our sales team who will be able to assist you with the next steps.
